IBC info

There are several versions of IBC containers or IBC tanks.

Look for and carefully read the description of your manufacturer's tank lower down the page to help you find replacement parts.

Tanks can be on a plastic, wooden or metal pallet. Some tanks are all metal. Plastic ones may have double walls, which may also be coloured. The most common volume is 1000L, but there are also 800L, 600L, 300L, 200L, etc.

The most common tankers in our country are made by Schutz and Greif.
Č
If you have a tank from these two manufacturers, all 100% fittings and caps purchased from us will fit.
Tanks from other manufacturers can also be found to a lesser extent.

Covers (above) are most often in two dimensions. DN150 (sometimes also spelled 165mm or S165x7) and DN225 (sometimes also spelled 225mm or S245x6).
Please check the manufacturer description of your tank lower down the page for the compatibility of our covers with different manufacturers.

Valves:
All manufacturers can be found loputasteball and camlock valve, some also offer cylindrical.
Tank valves come in different sizes and are usually threaded, but some valves are glued to the tank - these cannot be easily removed. If the valve is removed, an opening of different diameters is left on the tank. At this point we can use the items we have named "jumper" and in combination with the tap, the tank is usable again.
Thread markings on valves (can mean the thread on the side where the valve is connected to the tank or on the outlet side - so the valve can have S75x6 on the tank side and S60x6 on the outlet side):
Different codes:

  • S60x6 or DN50 or 2″ (DN50 is just the diameter of the valve, and threads can be different - coarse, fine, slight diameter differences, camlock shape, etc.) ,
  • S75x6, R80x6, S80x6,
  • S80x8, S92x4,
  • S100x8 or DN80 or 3″.
Sketches and measurements can be found further down the page to help you visualise.

Manufacturers and main features:

Schutz

Most often the tank is labelled ECOBULK or RECOBULK.
Valves: Flap (glued or screwed) DN50 and DN80, ball DN50.
You can check graphically which valve fits your tank below the page.
Top covers: DN150, DN225. The largest selection, all in stock.

Greif (former Fustiplast - older tanks are marked Flubox)
The tank also bears the GCUBE inscription.
Valves: butterfly and ball DN50.
You can check graphically which valve fits your tank below the page.
Top covers: DN150, DN225. Their larger cover, 225mm, is special - we have them in our range.

Mauser
has the same threads on the valve (e.g. S60x6 (DN150), S100x8 (DN80)), but the the thread starts in a different place - so a connector not specifically designed for tanks from this manufacturer may end up facing the wrong way - This is only relevant for example for the item "Threaded elbow spout", which does not have a swivel nut to adjust the position and can be mounted after installation facing up instead of downNo problems with other items.
The threads on the tank's balloon (where the valve is mounted) also differ slightly. There can be up to 2mm differences, but this is usually not a problem.
In a nutshell: corresponds to the 99% cases intended for Schutz and Greif.
Mauser valves: butterfly valves DN50 and DN80, cylindrical DN50, ball DN50.
You can check graphically which valve fits your tank below the page.
Mauser top caps: DN150 (same as Schutz or Greif), DN225. DN225 cover has double thread (thread with two beginnings). We also offer this.

Werit
has identical threads on the lower part of the tank (valve).
Their top caps are "standard", but differ slightly. The DN150 cover has a thread S160x7 Our lids fit perfectly on this thread, but we can't garnish the 100% sealing - so if you turned a tank full of water upside down, it might drip off the lid - but not necessarily. Their larger lid DN225 has a thread S240x7 unlike the standard S245x7, it fits Schutz well.

Maschio
Their thread on the tank where the valve is screwed in can be S60x6 in addition to the standard S60x6. S80x8, which is unique to them - we don't have this reducer. Their caps are "standard" DN150 and DN225, but the thread starts differently, so our lids do not fit these tanks perfectly - will not seal well or will be difficult to screw in.

Sotralentz
Valves: flap or ball and also glued or screwed) DN50, flap screwed DN80. Same as Schutz.
Top covers: DN150 (we don't have a suitable cover), DN225.

The tank balloon is made of durable HDPE plastic and, in principle, there are no major problems with it, even after many years. Valve plastics (especially flap valves) that are exposed to strong sun in summer and cold in winter for a long time are more problematic. We strongly recommend the use of UV protective mats - prolonging the life of the tank and valve and preventing algae growth in the tank.

Each tank has its own purpose.
When buying a used tanker, pay attention to what it previously contained. A lot of tanks are used for various chemicals and additives.
If the cistern is not clean, it is not suitable for watering the garden.

There are many different tanks, with different threads on the tank balloon and different valves.
Here are the most common variations:

thread on the tank

S60x6 (2″) / DN50
Coarse thread.
Any S60 reducer or adapter can be mounted here.
However, the installation of a valve or valve replacement is the most recommended.

OUTSIDE TOW DIMENSION: 55-62mm

Distance between the strings: 6mm

thread on the tank
S75x6 (2″) / DN50
Coarse thread.
The S75 valve, reducer or S75 adapter is mounted here.
However, the installation of a valve or valve replacement is the most recommended.
OUTSIDE NAVIGATION DIAMETER: 70-77mm
Distance between the strings: 6mm
thread on the tank
S80x6 (2″) / DN50
Coarse thread.
Install the R80 valve in this location.
However, the installation of a valve or valve replacement is the most recommended.
OUTSIDE NAVIGATION DIAMETER: 74-81mm
Distance between the strings: 6mm
thread on the tank
S80x8 (2″) / DN50
Coarse thread.
This thread is only used by Maschio IBC. We do not have an adapter for them.
OUTSIDE NAVIGATION DIAMETER: 74-81mm
Distance between the strings: 8mm
thread on the tank
S100x8 (3″) / DN80
Coarse thread.
The S100 reducer or adapter is mounted on such a valve.
However, the installation of a valve or valve replacement is the most recommended.
THE OUTER DIAMETER OF THE THREAD: 97-100mm
Distance between the strings: 8mm
DH 63mm
DH 63mm
A rarer version of the tanker.
When the valve is dismantled, an internal thread of 63mm diameter remains on the tank.
The Reducir DH 63mm fits into this thread.
Distance between the strings: 3mm
THE INTERNAL DIAMETER OF THE THREAD: 63mm
S60x6, S100, S92 valve

S60x6 (2,36″)/ DN50 - The classic, most common thread.
Coarse thread.

Any S60 reducer or adapter can be mounted on such a valve.
OUTSIDE TOW DIMENSION: 55 - 62mm
Distance between the strings: 6mm
S60 FINE thread
S60 FINI thread - Such threads are more rare.
Fine thread.
The S60 reducer or a fine thread adapter of the appropriate diameter is mounted on the valve.
OUTSIDE NAVIGATION DIAMETER: 59mm
Distance between the strings: 2,31mm
S60x6, S100, S92 valve
S92x4 (3″) / DN80
Coarse thread.
The S92 reducer or adapter is mounted on such a valve.
THE OUTER DIAMETER OF THE THREAD: 92mm
Distance between the strings: 4mm
S60x6, S100, S92 valve
S100x8 (3″) / DN80
Coarse thread.
The S100 reducer or adapter is mounted on such a valve.
THE OUTER DIAMETER OF THE THREAD: 90-100mm
Distance between the strings: 8mm
camlock valve

Camlock fine thread valve 63mm (2″) / DN80
Fine thread.

A reducer or fine thread adapter of the appropriate diameter or any 2″ camlock connector (which snaps into a groove on the valve) is fitted to the valve. So we have two options. Although the manufacturer advises against a threaded connection, he suggests that if it is garden water, there is no problem.
OUTSIDE NAVIGATION DIAMETER: 63mm
Distance between the strings: 2,31mm

If your valve breaks and you don't want to replace it, you can use the S75x6, S80x6, S100x8 or S60x6 adaptor directly (depending on the tank) - all with a coarse thread. In rare cases, the thread can also be internal or something more special. In this case, please take a picture of it and send it to us.

So, using these adapters, you can use the tank without the valve.

If a valve glued to the tank has broken, you can use our products "brackets” .

You can buy almost all of the above connectors from us.

Most valves are threaded, but there are also some that are glued to the tank. Comparison below:

Glued valve
Threaded valve. There are many different types of these, including those with an aluminium nut.

USA and Canada - explanation of fine threads on taps and fittings

We have a solution for almost all known versions of IBC tanks worldwide.

In the USA and Canada, please note only that all our fine threads are BSP and not NPT as is commonly used in these two countries.

Pipes and fittings sold in the USA and Canada usually have a different thread type than those sold in the EU. In the USA, the most common type of pipe thread is the NPT (National Pipe Thread) standard, which includes variants of NPT and NPTF (National Pipe Thread Fuel). These thread types have a tapered shape and are widely used for plumbing connections in the USA.

In the EU, the most common type of tapping thread is the British Standard Pipe (BSP), which includes variants of the BSP and British Standard Pipe Taper (BSPT). Like NPT, these tapping thread types are tapered and are widely used in plumbing applications in Europe.

Because of these differences in thread types, it is important to use the correct fittings and adaptors when connecting taps or plumbing components from different regions. Mixing incompatible thread types can cause leaks and other plumbing problems. If you are not sure which type of thread is used in your region, or if you are involved in cross-border plumbing projects, it is recommended that you consult a local plumbing expert or supplier to ensure compatibility.

What do we do with the tank in winter?

We are often asked what to do with the tank in winter:

  • Do I need to empty it?
  • Is the tanker frost-proof?
  • Do I need to leave the valve open?

In short: It is best to empty the tank in winter.
The material of the IBC tank is HDPE plastic. It is a very resistant, stable material, but plastic is just plastic.

It is also very important to leave the valve OPEN in winter. Why?
Water accumulated in the valve could freeze, causing it to expand and burst or damage the valve.
The mechanism that seals off the water inside the valve has a seal. Whether it is a butterfly, ball or slide valve, they all work in a similar way.
Even if you empty the tank completely, a minimal amount of water still remains on the seal surface (film, condensation), especially if the valve is closed!
This small amount of water can freeze and is enough to stop the valve leaking in spring.

If you would like to keep water in the tank even in winter and you use a pressure reducer with a tap at the valve end, we recommend you to buy ANTI FREEZE protection for the tap (coming soon). Leave the tank valve open.

How to use an IBC tank for rainwater storage

To connect a downpipe (gutter pipe) to an IBC rainwater harvesting tank, follow these steps:

Determine the location: choose a suitable location for the IBC tank. It is best to place it close to the drop pipe to make the connection as easy as possible.

Install a drain diverter (filter/leachate diverter): a drain diverter is a device that directs the flow of water from the gutter drain to the desired container. Usually there is already a filter for coarse particles (leaves). Install the diverter on the downpipe so that it can divert the water to the IBC tank.

You can also run the drop hose directly into the tank without using drop filters - for example with a TritonFlex cover.

Place the IBC tank on a stable and level surface, preferably a solid platform or concrete base. Ensure that it is positioned close to the drop pipe to reduce the length of the connecting pipe.

Connect the hose: Connect the outlet of the outflow diverter to the IBC tank using a suitable hose such as PVC or flexible hose. Cut the hose to the required length and securely fasten it at both ends with suitable fittings or clamps if using flexible hose.

To prevent any leakage or water loss, make sure that the connections between the pipe, diverter and IBC container are properly sealed.

Position the pipe for optimum flow: make sure the pipe has a downward slope from the outflow diverter to the IBC tank. This will allow gravity to assist the smooth flow of water.

Optional filtering: if desired, an (additional) filter of suitable density can be installed in the tank lid to prevent impurities from entering the IBC. This helps to maintain water quality and reduces possible clogging and the growth of micro-organisms, algae, etc.

Shade the IBC tank. Use the TARP Protective Tarpaulin.

You can connect several IBC tanks together to increase the amount of rainwater stored.

Test the system: once the pipes are securely connected, test the rainwater harvesting system by letting the water flow into the IBC tank. Check for any leaks or problems and adjust if necessary.

Remember to clean the gutters and drain from time to time to prevent the build-up of debris that could clog the system. In addition, consider introducing overflow mechanisms or additional storage solutions if the IBC tank reaches its capacity during heavy rainfall.

Have you ever wondered how much pressure the tap on your IBC tank is flowing under?

It is not the size of the tap that matters, but how full the tank is. More water above the tap (water column) means more pressure. For a full 1000 litre tank, this means about 0.1 bar.

As far as the flow rate is concerned, the size of the tap is important; a larger tap lets in more water.

The pressure therefore depends on the water level in the tank, while the flow rate depends on the size of the tap.

Simple physics that makes a big difference!
